I struggle with the old “show, don’t tell” adage. I know I should write my characters visibly acting out their emotions, but I always fall back on the same gestures.
I was recently in a writing workshop about word choice. I found myself wishing someone would just list ways each body part could move to express emotion in a human being.
Then I realized: why not me?

Note: I tried to avoid phrases that don’t make sense: bile rose in her throat; he let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding; she bit her lip until she drew blood. These things don’t happen nearly as often as we authors think they do.
